12 April 2019Jakarta, KOMPAS - Engineering is the choice of the operator of PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) in overcoming disruptions in electric trains. This step was taken following a number of limitations, such as the availability of spare parts in the country making electric trains.
Throughout 2019, around 85 of 171 disruptions to the Electric Rail (KRL) train trip were caused by damage to trains or facilities.
Director of PT KCI Maintenance Engineering, John Roberto Tuman, on Wednesday (04/10/2019), said that his party cooperated with a Japanese railroad company, namely JR East and Tokyo Metro, in an effort to maintain and repair KRL.
Almost all of the total 956 electric train units operating in Jabodetabek, Cikarang, and Rangkasbitung are currently used trains purchased from train operators in Japan. The train series are generally old series which have been replaced by the latest series in Japan.
"We bought the train from Japan. The age of the train (when purchased) is over 25 years. There the 25-year-old train has retired. Well, the train that we bought. At present, KRL production in 1985 and 1993 is still operating in Indonesia, "said John.
Several recent disruptions to the KRL have occurred in the electric components of the train.
The process of replacing the KRL is not easy considering the factory in Japan does not produce train parts because the train includes the old series.
P KCI also works with one of the factories in China to engineer spare parts with the same functions as spare parts from Japan. According to John, if this engineering is successful, damage to the train can be overcome.
PT KCI President Director Wiwik Widayanti said, this year according to the plan there are 192 units of KRL from Japan and in 2020 there will be 96 units. In addition there are additional KRL trips from 938 to 980 trips per day.
