ACEH–DELI TRAIN (Historical, Political and Economic Studies in 1876–1942) Usman (NPM 1309300050017) Promoter: Prof. Dr. Said Muhammad, M.A. Co-promoter: Dr. Said Musnadi, M.Sc., Dr. Husaini, M.A. Doctor of Social Sciences Education Darussalam, Banda Aceh April 2018 ABSTRACT The development of the Aceh and Deli railways by the Dutch colonial government for military defense, unification of power and public transport transportation in the conquered areas both in war and peace for socio-political and economic interests in the Dutch East Indies ( 1876–1942).
The aims of this research are:
(1) historical study and development of railway infrastructure at Atjeh Staats Spoorwegen (ASS) and Deli Spoorwege Maatschappij (DSM) in the political actions or policies of the Dutch East Indies Government
(2) the role of the Atjeh Staats Spoorwegen (ASS) and Deli Spoorwege Maatschappij (DSM) railways in the colonial period in terms of community needs with the perspective of the Social Embeddedness theory that the railway program was desired by the people or the Dutch Government (1876–1942)
(3) the relationship between the influence of Aceh and Deli rail transportation in the socio-political life of society during the Dutch colonial period.
The research methodology is historical critical and interview approach. As a critical historical method, it consists of four research processes, namely collecting sources, interpreting sources, criticizing sources and historiography. In addition, using an interview approach to obtain information in the field. The findings of this study indicate that transportation in Aceh and Deli is that the Dutch East Indies Government designed political and military policies to build railway infrastructure in Aceh and Deli to be more advanced and modern.
In addition, the construction of rail transportation in Aceh has opened a new era called "Peace of Aceh". During the period (1920–1939) Atjeh Staats Spoorwegen and Deli Spoortwege Maatschappij provided 108 locomotives, 3,054 freight cars to transport tobacco export commodities totaling 59,491,551 packs, latet containing 15,712,131 tons, 15,296,009 palm oil. barrel, 83,000 tons of tea, and 115 tons of patchouli. Public passenger transportation is as many as 7,577,983 people, and there is an influence along the railway line that new settlements and cities of national and international standard (Kutaraja and Medan) appear. In 1940–1942, rail transportation still had a vital role as a means of transportation of logistical warfare or infantry troops stationed at strategic posts on cross-stations, starting from the border between Aceh and Deli and finally the Aceh–Deli railway stopped operating in 1942.
